New Year, New Start, Welcome To 2019!
The new year is almost here and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about the new year ahead and what you wish to achieve. Maybe you are going to finally find your dream job or maybe you will start that hobby you have been meaning to do.
It’s a new year so it’s a new start!
Why should plan for the year ahead?
Having a plan is an important part of not just business but also your personal life. Having a plan in place helps to keep your organised and focused, and gain clarity.
It’s extremely important that you have a plan in written form, that can mean typed up on a computer, however if you start a plan on paper then the act of writing can sometimes help you feel connected to what you are doing.
It’s important to have your plan in written form as not only for recall later but so that you can gain clarity, you will find as you are working on your plan that your thoughts will become clear and you will start to find it easier to define your goals.
What are some things I can be doing to get ready for the New Year?
There are many things that you can be doing now in order to prepare for the New Year, both in and out of the office.
If you are taking time off over the festive period, have you got systems in place to ensure you do not return to a backlog of work?
You should also undertake a similar process for your home, ensure that bills will be paid and that the day to day running of your household continues.
It is also extremely important to take some time out in order to reflect on the year just gone by. What do you feel went well? What do you feel went wrong? What do you think could be improved? What was your biggest achievement? What lessons have you learnt?
The New Year should signal new beginnings, so it is very important to take some time to reflect, repent, and renew.
What about goals?
It is important to make sure you start the New Year with some goals that you can work towards, these goals should be specific and achievable.
These goals can be about absolutely everything, they don’t only have to be professional or personal. They can focus on your skills, relationships, career, finances, home, fitness, etc.
If you are unsure how to set goals, then just follow these steps –
- Decide what you want to work on or achieve in your life
- Write these things down and/ or talk to someone about these things
- Start breaking these things down into stages/ steps that are manageable/ realistic – do not over exert yourself or set goals that are out of your reach (very few people become multi-millionaires in a year)
- Think about the steps needed to achieve these things – be specific what needs to happen, deadlines, will you need anything or anyone, what don’t you have and how can you overcome this?
- Define and finalise your goals
- …and go!
What about failure?
Failure is a scary thing, failure is demotivating, failure is a very common fear. One of my biggest current fears is failure and what the repercussions of that would mean. However, I am starting to learn that sometimes failure is not such a bad thing, in fact failure is in fact important.
Failure is how you learn your biggest lessons, and quite often it is not the failure itself that is important but what happens afterwards which will pave the way to your future success.
Do you admit defeat, hold your hands up, or give up? Or do you dust yourself off, reflect on what happens, change your strategy, and keep going?
Yes, failure hurts and it makes you feel rubbish, but it can also drive you to work harder and smarter.
Let’s make 2019 our year!
2018 has been a very tough year for many people, it has signalled change for a lot of people. However, the year is now coming to an end and a New Year is on its way.
Are you ready? Have you set your goals? Are you ready for success? Are you ready for failure?
Are you ready for 2019?
Happy New Year!
