Sometimes You Just Need To Take A Step Back
It is so easy when you are running a business to get so caught up in everything that is going on that you suddenly find yourself overwhelmed. When we are so focused on something when we are giving it our all we tend to lose perspective and miss little warning signs. This is why it is important to slow down sometimes, take stock, refocus, and remember what we are doing and why.
We all owe it to ourselves to look after ourselves, self-care is so important but also very easy to overlook.
Slow down to speed up!
This is something which you have probably heard numerous times, but it is very true! In order to get ahead and excel you sometimes need to slow down. It may seem odd or even counterproductive but there is a method to the madness.
Slowing down allows you to –
- Prevent burnout
- Be more productive
- Stay on top
- Ensure quality
Sometimes it is not about how hard you work but how smart you work.
Learn to trust yourself
You know yourself better than anyone else, you know what you are capable of, you know your limits, you know what you love, you know what you hate, you know your mind, and you know your body.
Learn to trust your instincts and listen to your body, as these are two things that you should be prioritising above everything else.
If you are starting to feel stressed or overwhelmed, you should take a step back. It can be very tempting to keep going, especially if you have deadlines and responsibilities. However, if you burn out then what happens then? It is best to prevent burnout before you end up having to deal with the repercussions.
It is the same with your body, if you can feel your health deteriorating then that may be a sign that you need to take a break. I am not saying you must stop doing anything, however sometimes even just taking some time to get out in the fresh air and have a walk will be enough to make you feel a lot better.
Find clarity and purpose
I’m sure we can all relate to wasting all our time and energy on something just to realise that, it was a waste. We usually realise how much we have wasted when we give ourselves the opportunity to step back and think about what we have been preoccupied with.
By regularly allowing yourself time to step back and refocus you can prevent becoming too invested in something that in the long run which provide little results, and even worse, was not right for you!
You need to ensure that you are heading in the right direction, the direction that feels right, the direction that is giving you results, and the direction that will lead you to your long-term goals.
Changing direction does not mean giving up
It is so easy to feel like you have got so far, you need to keep going, you cannot give up. However, you need to bear in mind the saying “insanity is doing the same thing several times and expecting different results”. If something is not working, if you have reached a dead end, then it is ok to change direction.
Giving up is just that, giving up! Changing direction is looking for another solution for whatever problem you are facing. Whether it’s a relationship problem, financial problem, professional problem, whatever. The problem itself does not matter, what matters is you recognise when you need to stop what you are doing and take stock.
Sometimes the right thing may be to give up and stop. However, most of the time all you need is to change your focus and try something else. Life is all about trial and error.
Success is rarely built overnight
If you ask any of the people who you see as successful, that inspire you, that you feel ‘have it all’. I am 99.9% certain that if you ask them what their secret is, they will, most likely, respond with something along the lines of ‘a lot of hard work’, or ‘a lot of trial and error’, or even ‘a lot of blood, sweat, and tears’.
Success rarely will happen overnight, even in the fairytales you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince. Success takes time, patience, and dedication. This is why you do not need to do it all NOW, this is why you can take some time out, this is why you CAN put yourself first sometimes.
You need to do what is right for you because YOU are important.
