Why It’s Important To Look After Yourself
Modern life can be extremely stressful, trying to manage your work, life, and family commitments can seem like an impossible task it’s no wonder so many struggle to find time to look after themselves.
Modern life is stressful
We all have so much going on in our lives, it is so easy to get overwhelmed by everything that is going on. You do not have to go far to find examples of people feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and bogged down by the constant demands and pressures of modern life.
The top five causes of stress are centred around –
Everyone is different though; no two people will cope with the same situation the same way. However, it is important to try and find coping mechanisms and solutions to your problems in order to try and keep your stress under control.
Whilst a little bit of stress in perfectly normal and at times unavoidable, long term stress can have an impact of your physical and mental health.
How to overcome stress
There are lots of ways to overcome stress and reduce the pressure of modern-day life, and these can be broken down into four key steps-
Identifying your triggers – these are things that almost instantly rise your stress levels, these could be things that occur regularly or rarely, but the impact is still there. Even if you cannot avoid these situations, experiences, or scenarios – just by identifying that these triggers cause you stress you can start to take proactive to prepare yourself.
Addressing your main concerns – these are mainly big events or situations that cause you stress, but you can take proactive steps to improve the situation, things like debt or relationship break down. There may not be a ‘magic want’ that makes everything better but there are still steps you can take to improve your situation such as speaking to a debt adviser or trying to reach a compromise/ understanding with the other person.
Organising your time – these are usually daily/ weekly/ monthly tasks which need to be done but become overwhelming and you eventually find yourself looking at the day/ week/ month ahead and wonder how you are going to get everything done. The solution this step is often involves sitting down, listing everything that needs to be done and when it needs to be done, and organising your day, week, and month into easy and achievable time slots. Don’t be afraid to delegate work or seek help from others where possible. You do not have to do everything yourself, help is available.
Accepting that you cannot change everything – this is the easiest but also hardest step as acceptance that sometimes things ‘just are’ and there is nothing that can be done is not always an easy thing to accept. However, once you can accept that you cannot change everything you can begin to focus and prioritise those things which are in your control.
A wise person once said you me “You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you”, this has helped me massively accept those things that I cannot control and to become more proactive with things that I can.
These four steps can take you a long way towards being able to reduce your stress down to more manageable levels and improving your overall health and wellbeing.
Look after all of you, not just part of you
Learning to manage your stress is just one step towards taking care of yourself, there are many other things that you can do to look after your overall wellbeing.
Look after your body, it is so important to eat well, sleep well, and be active. It can be very hard at time and we are all guilty of neglecting ourselves occasionally. However, neglecting to look after your body for prolonged amounts of time can have a huge impact on our physical health.
Talk to people, build a support network and reach out when you need to. Even if the person you are speaking to does not have the answer to all your problems just having that space to talk to people can relieve tension and give you some clarity. Even if you do not wish to talk to people, just being around other people can give you space to unwind and can also provide clarity.
Learn and develop, you are never too old to learn and new skill or develop an existing skill. It is important to keep your mind stimulated and active. This can improve your overall mental and physical health.
Take a moment, it can be so difficult to find time to stop and take a moment. However, finding time for yourself, to focus on yourself, and to look after yourself is extremely important. What you do with this time is up to you, some will like to treat themselves, some will like to relax, some will like to reflect. However, just booking some time in your schedule to focus on you will help you to relax, reenergise, and provide clarity and perspective.
Give back, when you are feeling run down and in need of support then you can be forgiven for not really having the headspace to think of others. However, giving back and helping those in need have many rewards. Being active in a community can be a valuable resource, if you are part of a community then you can all reach out to each other, you can all look out and support each other, you will always have people to turn to.
The next steps!
Whatever it is that is causing you stress I hope you can see now that it is possible to overcome. So, start identifying what is causing you to feel stressed and look for strategies or people who can help eliminate them.
Allowing these things to build up will just prolong the problem and may also create new ones, so take action! What is something which stresses you out? Is there anything that someone else can help you with? What about the things you can’t change, what would help you move closer to acceptance?
